Mistakes Make The Best of Us

“The only real mistake is the one from which we learn nothing” – John Powell

Some argue that we only learn when we make mistakes. There are many quotes about such a thing but as a society, there is still a stigma around making mistakes. Especially in the workplace. So, is it good to make a mistake? Or does it have the potential to hurt your employment?

Therefore, I think we should take on the mentality that mistakes shouldn’t be encouraged but are expected. And acknowledge that some mistakes have the potential to be detrimental to one’s career. Below are some tips and tricks on how to deal with a mistake that you have made so you can minimize the bad in it and maximize the lesson you learned!

Own up to it.

The worst part about making a mistake is that you must own up to it. Whether you are the one that can fix it on your own or you must tell your manager… you must own up to it. Last week I sent a flyer to the printer that had a misspelling on it. I did not have anyone proofread it for me and I suffered the consequences. I printed 200 flyers with a misspelling that had to be recycled. The worst part is I sat on the mistake for a few days trying to figure out how to fix it on my own. Whereas if I told my manager right away, I probably would have suffered less guilt and had the new flyers within the same week as the mistake. Therefore tip #1, own up to your mistakes right away and do not try to fix it on your own.

Fix it.

Once you own up to your mistake the next thing to do it to fix it. After I discussed the mistake with my manager, we decided to recycle the incorrect flyers, correct the misspelling and then order new ones.

Learn from it.

After making this mistake I have learned to always have someone proofread my work from now on! Always! But also, to take my time while working. It is important to take pride in my work and to make sure I have done the task to the best of my ability before I send it on to the next step.

We Started an Internal Newsletter & Our Employees Love it

We all know that communication is a necessity, but sometimes it is hard. Especially between upper management and employees. With the day to day grind compliments that should be said are not always given.

According to Clear Company, 69% of employees said they would work harder if they were better recognized (link to article below). There are so many avenues to offer recognition, why not implement one to help your team better recognize your employees.

Here at Tee Jay Service we decided to start an internal company newsletter. The newsletter is broken into five major sections: Event Recap, Always Be Closing, Social Media, Funtivities, and Upcoming Events. This newsletter is sent out via email at the end of every quarter.

The Event Recap section is to let everyone know what events some of the staff has been attending. Whether it be a certification course or a networking event.

Always Be Closing is a great section because it gives the whole company an outlook on what we had accomplished during the last quarter. We use this not only as recognition but also motivation to sign up just as many jobs during the next quarter.

Our Social Media section is to inform employees of the current status of our Facebook page. We encourage them all to follow it and help our marketing coordinator achieve the set goals for number of follows and likes.

Funtivities is by far the most entertaining section of our newsletter. This section provides a recap of the various posts that have been made and the current numbers for how many followers and likes the page has.

Upcoming events is the final section of the newsletter and it helps our employees mark their calendars for upcoming company parties. Every month we try to have a moral boosting event to help keep employees motivated and engaged. One of these events is having a desk decorating competition for each holiday. Not only does it up the competitive edge in the office, but it also makes our workspace more personal and cozy.

We have seen great employee engagement since sending out this letter. The best part about sending out this letter is that it is internal meaning only our employees see it. This way we can tailor it to be more personal and family like compared to what we would send our customers.

Does Your Goal Really Matter to You?

We are a little over a week into 2020 and this is about the time where the excitement and freshness of our resolutions start to dwindle. The gym becomes less busy, that one cheat meal turns into a day of cheat meals, we start to lose our will to keep our goals going.

And the reality of why is quite sobering. We realize that we are still the same people we were on December 31st. We still have the same struggles, the same habits, and the same responsibilities. As a society, we believe in the illusion that when we go to bed early in the morning on January 1st and wake up later that day, we will wake up a new person ready to conquer our new goals. When, the same reasons you did not accomplish your goals the previous year are still with you.

According to Forbes, less than 8% of people complete their New Year’s resolution. 25% stop pursuing this goal after the first 30 days.

There are multiple reasons why people stop pursuing their goals. It could be emotional, financial, etc. But often times these are excuses because people do not set their goals correctly from the beginning (which we have talked about on our blog before: https://www.teejaydoors.com/2019/12/04/new-year-new-goals/) but it could also be from us setting goals that do not align with our passion, or our core values.

If a person really does not want to stop eating fast food, yet they set a resolution for it, they will still eat fast food and they will find ways to justify it because this goal does not really matter to them.

That is why it is crucial to set goals and resolutions that matter to us on a deeper level rather than setting superficial goals just because everyone else is. Also, it is okay to not have a New Year’s goal or resolution. That is because making ourselves better is an every day, every year, every decade job.

We are the only ones who know how to make ourselves better. So instead of thinking this is the year, or next year will be easier. Think about the little things you can do every day to accomplish your goals rather than give something a year long time limit. Because little things start to add up.

Back in October 2019 we started posting company blogs with a new series called Blog Post Wednesday. Since our blogs have been gaining so much traction, we are going to start writing blogs twice a week!

That means we will no longer be maintaining the same schedule as we have the past few months. We will now post blogs every Monday and Friday. The perfect way to start and end your week!

Our Facebook posts will remain on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. But we will be replacing Blog Post Wednesday with a new series! This new series will be called Mid-Week Motivation and focus on how to push through the rest of your week because we all know Wednesday is one of the more difficult days to stay focused.

With this new schedule comes new content and content goals. In 2020 we are hoping to post more video content. Whether it be employee interviews or a behind the scenes look into our office or shop we want to post more engaging content!

Therefore, if there are any posts that you would like to see please let us know. You can email jajungels@teejaydoors.com with your ideas or feedback. We are very excited for this new year and we hope you are too!

How to Make the Perfect Company Christmas Card

It is the time of year where your office is most likely getting what feels like a million Christmas cards. You might be asking yourself should we send one back? What would we even say? Here at TJS we struggled with the same predicaments you are thinking of and asked the same questions. 2019 was the first year that we sent out a Christmas card and we are happy to say it will become an annual process. Below you will find tips on how to make your company Christmas card the best it can be.

This is not your family Christmas card.

It is important to keep in mind that this card should not be too personal since it will be sent out to multiple companies at one time. Therefore, you should leave religion and employee names out of it. Your company is simply wishing another one a happy holiday season.

Keep it simple.

This Christmas card does not need to be full of glitz and glam. Tee Jay Service sent out a Christmas card over email. It took only ten minutes to design and five minutes to send out. It does not matter how you send well wishes. If the design of the card is professional and you are thanking the company, you card will be received with open arms.

Double check you are thanking the company.

You are most likely sending a company a holiday card because you have been doing business with them. It is very important to include thank you in your card. Tee Jay Service Company said, “Thank you for choosing TJS for all your automatic door needs”.

If you follow these guidelines, you are guaranteed to have a wonderful company Christmas card!

New Year, New Goals

  • December 4, 2019/

It is the last month of the year and we cannot believe it here at Tee Jay Service Company. Our company has grown and had its trials throughout the year just like any other company and we could not be more thankful! We have learned lessons, weathered change, and came out a stronger team. We cannot wait to see what 2020 has in store for us. Below you will find a list of how to make goals for your company for the new year and how you can stick with them!

1.Think of what needs to change.

Among the trials and problems your company has worked through this year it is important to recount them approaching 2020. A lot of companies will not think of the mistakes they made when it comes to making new goals. Often the company will make goals without thinking of what really needs to be changed. An example would be of setting a goal that everyone in the company needs to reply to emails within a day. Alright, but why are employees taking so long to reply to emails now? Do they have too heavy of a workload? Are they being looped into conversations that do not pertain to their department?

The key is to make sure that when you make a goal, it is working on a problem, not the result of a problem.

2. Make sure the goal is realistic.

More times than not, the goals individuals set are not realistic. We see all the time people who have never gone to the gym, get a gym membership and they are no longer going by February. But maybe if they would have started off slower, like going on walks around their neighborhood and quick at home workouts, maybe they would have been more successful.

The same applies to career/work-based goals. Instead of making a content calendar for the whole year, set a goal to make a content calendar every month when the month approaches. Trying to plan 12 months ahead at the end of the year is, you guessed it, unrealistic.

3. Make sure everyone is aware of the goals you have set.

There is nothing worse than being left out of a big idea. Especially when the big idea affects your job duties or department. It is crucial that when you are setting company goals that everyone is notified so the goal can be properly achieved. If one person is left out, they could be the crucial piece to the puzzle of making the goal a reality. Therefore, send out an email or have a team meeting making sure everyone on the team is aware of the goals and the requirements needed to make the goal a reality.

How to Be Productive

H

The holidays are here and along with them come some minor distractions. Like an amazon flash sale that does not align with your break time, but your mom really wants the iRobot Roomba for Christmas. We get it, we have all been there trying to juggle the holiday dinners, work tasks, and the items you forgot to pick up at the grocery store last night. Below you will find some tips on how to juggle the holiday madness while crushing it at work.

  1. Draw A Flowchart

Many people are fans of the classic to-do list. However, if you like to keep things even more organized, I suggest a flowchart. A flowchart is different from a to-do list because you are going to make different sections and then a list of tasks underneath. The key is to make the chart horizontal because it will be an easier visual representation of the tasks you have to accomplish. For this week I had three sections to my chart: Work, Family, & Personnel. Then underneath I listed all my tasks I need to accomplish for this “section” of my life. I like to list these tasks in order of importance. An example would be that writing a blog that has to get posted tomorrow is more important than making an email list that will be used in two weeks.

It is important to include dates and times along with each task, so you know right away if you need to reschedule or gather more information about the task.

Now, some of you are thinking how is this any different than multiple to-do lists? The key is that since the chart it is built horizontally is going to give you the ability to see everything you have to do, but in sections, and the most important tasks are right there for you to tackle. You can also use the chart in however you want. You can choose to work on one section at a time, or all of your most important tasks across the board. The chart gives you the ability to work through your tasks how you want to rather than making a giant list and trying to chip away at them one by one, possibly missing something important.

  1. Be in The Moment

If you are at work, focus on work tasks. If you are with family, focus on the family and making memories. If you are at the grocery store, focus on grocery shopping so you do not have to go back.

Being present in all things that we do will not only help us complete the task faster, but it will also ease the stress of other tasks you have to complete.

  1. Take Breaks

Last but certainly not least, make sure to take a break when you start to lose focus. Here at Tee Jay our shop is connected to our office space, meaning there are a lot of ways to get from one place to another. If I notice I am starting to lose focus I will go, get a fresh cup of water but take the long way to get to the water fountain.

It gets my body moving and helps me refocus on the task I need to accomplish.

How To Give Back

It is the time of year where we all try to give back as much as we can. Whether it be personal or through our company we all want to do as much as we can to help those in need around us. For business owners, it can be difficult to identify the best way for you company to give back so below we have a list of tips and tricks on how your company can put its best foot forward during the holidays!

  1. Volunteer locally.

The holidays are a very busy time. Employees will be taking time off, there will be distractions, and everyone is looking forward to the annual company Christmas Party. So, with all that is going on how does most of your company find the time to give back?

We suggest going to a local volunteer organization. For Tee Jay Service we have a local Feed My Starving Children about 10 min away from our office that we volunteer for. It is a great cause and a volunteer event that many of our employees and their families can attend.

2. Participate in a ‘drive’.

If your company cannot find a good time to all go out and volunteer together than another great option is to participate in a drive which you can bring to the office. Whether it be food, clothing, or gathering supplies for a local pet shelter, a company can gather these supplies at the office!

All you would have to do is reach out to a local food pantry, shelter, or other business gathering items and ask to participate. Some organizations will need you to bring all your donated items to the location or some will even pick them up for you at your office.

3. Set up a philanthropy club.

Companies that have many employees will sometimes set up a club within their organization that focuses on giving back to the employees and the community. This can allow the company to participate in volunteer events throughout the whole year!

Employees can choose to be a part of the club and help brainstorm events for the company. Some companies will make sure that the board members plan a certain number of events per year with a certain budget. Or the club will function through employee donations. Either way, they will be helping boost company morale.
